Digital Scrapbooking Day - Celebrate!

What is Digital Scrapbooking Day and how did it all get started?

Digital Scrapbooking Day (DSD) also known as International Digital Scrapbooking Day (iDSD) is celebrated on the first Saturday in November. This day was established in 2007. As the name implies, this is the digital version of traditional scrapbooking.
The word scrapbook comes from taking scraps of paper, ribbon, lace and other objects and using them to decorate a book that is used to preserve things in your life. Paper scrapping has a long history.

In the 15th century, “commonplace books” were popular in England. They were filled with items that were important to its maker, such as recipes, letters, poems, prayers and information that needed to be remembered.

“Friendship albums” became popular by the 16th century. These albums were used to collect the names and information about friends. Often this information would be written directly into the album by the friends themselves and would sometimes include illustrations.

Albums were created as a record of travel and would contain souvenirs and memorabilia from the trip. It became popular to decorate books or albums with embellishments of artwork.

By the 1800’s the average person could include photographs in their albums. These were added along with notes, newspaper clippings, ribbons and sketches.
Digital scrapbooking has become increasingly popular with the popularity of anything “tech”. Film cameras have become almost obsolete and we are increasingly keeping our photos and memorabilia on our computers and smart phones.

One of the questions I am often asked is – What do I do with my digital layouts after I make them? You do have some choices:
1.      Just keep them on your computer for you to enjoy and share with close family and friends
2.      Share them by uploading to social media sites
3.      Store them in online album
4.      Print them on your home printer and put them into an album
5.      Have a printing service make them into a bound book

Personally, I have done all of the above. I did make paper scrapbooks before I discovered digital. Once I started making digital layouts, I never looked back. I do still love paper crafts but I love digital more!

Most products for digital scrapbooking are sold in “kits”. These kits contain papers (backgrounds) and elements (embellishments). These individual files are opened in a suitable software program where they can be layered and moved around to create a pleasing arrangement that shows off your photo(s).
Here are some examples of finished layouts:
